Self-guided trips for the independent travellers

Experience a popular section of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track on your own terms with this flexible, self-guided adventure. Catch a water taxi from Tōtaranui in the northern end of the park to one of several beautiful destinations: Bark Bay, Onetahuti, Awaroa, or Apple Tree Bay.

You can choose to walk back or return by water taxi, depending on how much of the Coastal Track you’d like to cover. For a more relaxed day, a roundtrip boat transfer to and from Anchorage or Awaroa is also available, ideal for those who prefer not to do lengthy walks.

Drift Off Grid - Self-guided trips for the independent travellers

Self-guided trip options:

Depart Tōtaranui at 10:45 am.

Option 1 (1-hour walk): Get dropped to Onetahuti and walk to Awaroa. Enjoy lunch at Awaroa Lodge.

Option 2 (3-hour walk): Get dropped at Bark Bay and walk to Awaroa. Bring your own lunch or request a packed gourmet lunch from Drift Off Grid for an additional cost.

Option 3 (sightseeing and optional walk): Spot fur seals (Kekeno) on the way to Anchorage. Explore and relax before returning by boat to Tōtaranui.

Option 4 (2–2.5 hour walk): Get dropped at Apple Tree Bay and walk to Anchorage. Return by boat to Tōtaranui.

Option 5 (Full-Day Hike – 15.6 km / approx. 6 hours): Start with our car drop-off service to Tōtaranui, then hike through scenic sections of the park. Discover hidden beaches, native forest, and a seal colony at Separation Point. Stop for afternoon tea at Whariwharangi Homestead, then return via the saddle to the stunning views of Wainui Bay.


Important Note
The road from Drift Off Grid to Tōtaranui is mostly gravel. If you’re not confident driving on an unsealed road, we can arrange a transfer to and from Tōtaranui for an additional fee. Drive time is approximately 40 minutes.

It depends on your chosen route and pace. The Abel Tasman Coast Track offers multiple segments, so you can tailor your journey to suit your schedule—ranging from 1-hour walks to full-day hikes. The self-guided walk package gives you the freedom to explore at your own rhythm.


What safety measures are in place for self-guided walks?

Your safety is a top priority. We provide a detailed map, walking poles, rain poncho, and a first aid kit. You’ll also receive a personal locator beacon (PLB) to ensure peace of mind as you explore independently. These are the same standards we apply across all our guided and self-guided walks.


Is there a minimum fitness level required for the Bespoke Guided Tour?

No strict fitness level is required, but a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Our professional guide will tailor the pace and route to suit your ability, with regular rest stops and support along the way. This ensures a relaxed, inclusive experience for a wide range of participants.
